TUSHAAR & SNEHAL

Wedding Story

Tushaar and I met about 6 years ago and he proposed within 7 months after meeting me. Since I was still in graduate school, we decided to focus on finishing school, settling in our careers and saving up for a wedding – a Hindu wedding including 3 days of ceremonies! We knew that Hindu weddings can get expensive and involve a lot of hard work and stress on both families and parents of the bride and groom, so we wanted to make the whole wedding process from planning to celebrating less stressful, involving fun, and more affordable as possible.

When we decided on picking a date and begin the wedding planning process, we got in touch with Noelia at Proficient Travel and Gyna at I Do Destination Weddings. We looked at a couple of destinations – Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico, and Punta Cana. At the same time, we attempted to plan a local wedding to compare. It was much easier to have Noelia present me the packages at each destination and choose one from that than to plan a local wedding from trying to contact venues and vendors and try to work around a tight budget. After comparing both, we decided that going with a destination wedding was clearly the better way to go – it involved less researching and stress to give more time to enjoy wedding planning! Picking a destination wedding also gave us the ability to purchase our first home together in the heart of  Orlando – downtown where we both work and have a much better quality of life (avoiding traffic and being so close to everything).

"Having an all-inclusive resort with so many restaurants and bars, gave our guests the flexibility to enjoy whatever they preferred to eat every day while keeping our mothers and aunts out of the kitchen from cooking all day for everyone for all 3 days"

We selected Grand Palladium Palace Resort an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana for 3 days with family and friends (food and drinks included across more than 9 restaurants and bars)!  We wanted to make sure we please all of our guests who would be coming from everywhere – especially the vegetarians and Indians who need Indian food at least once every 2 days.  This was the deal breaker for us in Punta Cana – since there was an onsite Indian restaurant available for guests who prefer Indian food. Having an all-inclusive resort with so many restaurants and bars, gave our guests the flexibility to enjoy whatever they preferred to eat every day (except after the wedding and reception since private dinner and lunch was provided) while keeping our mothers and aunts out of the kitchen from cooking all day for everyone for all 3 days. It was less stressful on our families and guests really enjoyed having different food with each meal. The buffets had so many options during breakfast and dinner.

Once we chose the destination and date, Noelia and Gyna helped our guests with their bookings – flight and hotel. This made it easy on our guests and ourselves and helped ensure that our guests were roomed close to one another in the wedding party. It helped avoid guests from making mistakes on their bookings, eased their transportation from airport to the resort, and helped us manage our guest list because we were given a report every month of who has booked so far. I can imagine how chaotic and unorganized it would have been if we didn’t have our guest’s book through Noelia and Gyna and if everyone was told to just show up at the resort. We wouldn’t have been able to prepare for 120+ people without their assistance in booking our guests to get there. I really enjoyed working with Noelia and Gyna. In the initial process of planning, I was nervous with how things were going to work out, and I appreciate how Noelia would always sense that anxiety through my emails and would give me a call and assure me that all is taken care of and it will go well. She has such a calming voice! Gyna was very helpful with making sure guests remembered deadlines or if anything was missing. I know both Gyna and Noelia worked late into the evenings, and sometimes even on weekends! If they weren’t going to be available for any reason (bad weather or hurricane) they would let us know in advance! I appreciate all the hard work they put into this in making sure guests were booked properly! Even when we got to the resort, they made sure our wedding party had the best rooms and no issues with the rooms. They helped keep things in order and organized and took a stress load off of me. When guests had questions about booking, I was able to tell them to contact Noelia and Gyna which took the stress load off of me.

"Erika made my dream of entering in a doli come true and was able to have one made at the destination. It was beautiful when I saw it and very well decorated. The doli also matched my color theme – red, white, and gold! I felt like a Queen when I had made my grand entrance in the doli and I think this was something no one had expected to see at a destination wedding!

Since Noelia and Gyna were assisting our guests with helping them book their trips to the destination, this allowed more time for me to work with the onsite wedding coordinator, Erika Alvarez, with planning the wedding events at the destination. Erika was well educated about the Hindu traditions and cultures. She had a general understanding about each ceremony and even helped us manage to gather the items we needed for the religious ceremonies (coconuts/ rice/ flowers/ ghee, etc). She also helped me plan the dream wedding and went above and beyond our expectations for the wedding! Two of the most special things that made the wedding so magical was the doli Erika had gotten made in Punta Cana for me to enter in and an open riksha type scooter for the DJ and groom’s entry. During the wedding planning process, I was researching and trying to figure out ways to get or make a doli but it wouldn’t have looked like a doli that would have been available in the US. In fact, in my research I found that there is NO DESTINATION WEDDING that has a doli. However, Erika made my dream of entering in a doli come true and was able to have one made at the destination. It was beautiful when I saw it and very well decorated. The doli also matched my color theme – red, white, and gold! I felt like a Queen when I had made my grand entrance in the doli and I think this was something no one had expected to see at a destination wedding!

Erika was an amazing resort wedding coordinator. During the planning process, communication was a bit slow since we were in different countries and I’m sure Erika was planning other weddings as well, but we had enough time to finalize everything so it wasn’t an issue, and when we got to the resort, she reviewed all the events and everything with us the day before the events and she really surprised us with how everything turned out. We knew everything would turn out very nice but the result was just magical. Even our guests complimented on how everything was so well organized and smooth which made everything to be so much fun! She was always sticking by our side and making sure our guests were taken care of. She worked around any last minute changes or delays we may have had. She understood our needs for certain religious ceremonies and helped out with everything. She was wonderful and I really enjoyed working with her. She went above and beyond what we asked for – especially the doli!

We have received many compliments from our family and friends who attended the wedding that everything was so much fun and very well organized. In fact, family and friends who could not attend the wedding also complimented on how well everything looked and that they regret missing the one of kind traditional yet modern destination wedding! There are many differences between a local and destination wedding and if I was to recommend another couple planning their wedding – I’d say go for destination. It was much easier to plan, less work and stressful on both sides of the families, and we still got to follow the Hindu traditions – pithi ceremonies, bride entering in a doli, an amazing baraat, and more. Throughout the whole weekend, we felt like celebrities because even other tourists and guests at the resort knew there was an Indian wedding taking place and were always complimenting or enjoying the events (especially the baraat).

One of the most precious thing about a destination wedding is the fact that all of our guests – bride and groom’s friends and family are all on the same resort with their rooms close to one another allowing both parties to mingle, get to know each other and bond. In weddings, rarely do the bride and groom’s side really get to know each other. In ours, everyone got to know each other and became friends. In fact, many exchanged numbers and already made plans to meet again. It was really nice to see my friends and family laugh and party with Tushaar’s family and friends.

Tushaar and I are so happy we went with a destination wedding and we are so thankful for Noelia, Gyna, Erika and the staff at the Grand Palladium Palace Resort for taking such good care of our guests and both of us. We really had a great time and there is nothing else I would have done any different. If I were to get married again, I’d want it exactly the way it went!!!
